Retrieving

engaging a dogs natural instincts.

Retrieving Ability Tests for Gundogs (RATG) provide an excellent opportunity for dogs to engage in activities that align with their natural instincts. These tests are not only enjoyable for the dogs but also for their handlers as they train and compete together.

Retrieving trials are a simulated version of a day’s shooting where the dog remains in heel until sent to locate and retrieve fallen game.  Gundogs are required to retrieve over land and across water and retrieves can be sighted or blind (unseen). This takes a great deal of work with your dog.  To achieve the title of Retrieving Trial Champion requires achievement at several levels of competition and requires dedication and effort.

RATG events are open to both registered and associate gundogs, focusing on basic retrieving skills. They are typically organised by obedience clubs or held at Gundog Group shows and obedience trials.

Handlers can use whistles, voice commands, and hand signals to guide their dogs. These tests are a great way to showcase a dog’s retrieving abilities while reinforcing the bond between dog and handler through training and teamwork!
