agility
a dynamic and engaging dog sport.
Dog agility is a dynamic and engaging sport where handlers guide their dogs through a timed obstacle course. Originating from equestrian events, agility has developed its unique set of challenges, including jumps, ramps, tunnels, and seesaws.
In competitions, each course is designed by a judge, with a specific Standard Course Time (SCT) that teams must meet. Success hinges on navigating the obstacles without faults—like skipping an obstacle or knocking down a jump—while maintaining a good pace.
There are three main types of agility events: Agility, Jumping, and Agility Games. Agility events combine jumps, tunnels, and contact obstacles, while Jumping focuses solely on jumps and tunnels. Agility Games involve strategic choices about which obstacles to tackle, sometimes in tandem with another team.
As competitors advance, the complexity of the courses and the speed required increase. Achieving the title of Agility Champion (AG Ch) represents the pinnacle of success, requiring numerous qualifying rounds and placements at the highest levels. Agility trials are open to dogs over 18 months, and many clubs offer classes for handlers interested in honing their skills. It’s a fantastic way to bond with your dog while enjoying a challenging and rewarding sport!
